Hey!
It’s May already, and I thought it would be a good time to give you a quick update on SkEditor’s progress.
This post will be more of an announcement rather than a deep technical dive. I’m currently fully focused on the development itself, but you can expect a detailed blog post very soon… right when the first alpha version drops!
Alpha Release
I’m working hard on the alpha release of the new SkEditor. As some of you may know, I hate making promises with concrete dates, but I am pretty confident I’ll be able to release it in the next few weeks.
What to expect?
I’ll be 100% honest with you: the first alpha release won’t introduce any massive new features. In fact, it will probably have fewer features than the current stable version. But there’s a good reason for that.
The main goal of the alpha phase is to test the new architecture and all the refactored functionality. For example, I’m currently still working on some basic things, like the main menu and editor features. I’m honestly proud of the foundation I’ve built so far, and I can’t wait to share it with you.
What comes after?
Another alpha release, then another one, and another one. I’ll be gradually bringing back the missing features, introducing new ones, fixing bugs, and pushing QoL improvements - all based heavily on your feedback.
That’s why I would be incredibly grateful if you downloaded the alpha once it’s out, tested it, and let me know what you think. I have all the big features planned out, but it’s often the tiny details that make the biggest difference, and you are the best source of feedback for that.
I’m not exactly sure how long this alpha phase will last. I might wait until all major features are implemented before releasing a stable version, or I could push a stable release as soon as feature parity with the old version is reached. I’ll also probably switch to “beta” releases at some point to smooth the transition. Either way, the pre-release phase is the new reality for SkEditor for the time being.
Closing remarks
I hope you’re as excited about this as I am. Fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly and my next post will be the official release announcement already! In the meantime, if you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to ask on the Discord server.
